Ft. Massac State Park, Metropolis, IL. This replica fort was constructed in 2002 and 2003 as part of the Bi-Centennial celebration of Lewis and Clark’s exploration of the Louisiana Purchase.
By 2009 the Fort was closed to public use because it was deemed unsafe. Heritage Preservation Resources was contracted to review all drawings and construction documents and to inspect the fort to determine what had gone wrong. A detailed report was prepared that identified both design and construction problems. The report was delivered to the Capital Development Board of Illinois. The State of Illinois is seeking remedies for the problems as well as planning to make repairs to open the fort and its buildings to visitors.
