Romero Cabin, Los Alamos, New Mexico. Heritage Preservation Resources provided a condition assessment of this seriously deteriorated National Register listed structure in 2008. At the request of the Los Alamos Historical Society in 2009, the cabin was fully disassembled and completely rebuilt using a mixture of original and new logs replacing those that were missing or decayed. New roof, floors and walls were installed; new rustic furniture was built and used on the interior. Because the building would receive minimal maintenance, modern materials were hidden in the building to add years to the structure’s life. This cabin celebrates the way-of-life of many Hispanic families who went to the mountains each summer to make a living raising stock, living in seasonal shelters such as this one, in the 19th and early 20th century.
